Objective: To raise awareness within the community about what the Poteau Main Street Program does for the community.
Mission Statement: To stimulate economic development and historical preservation of downtown Poteau through promotion of cultural events and beautification projects as an exciting place to shop, work, live, play and invest.
We want everyone in the community to appreciate the historic buildings that we still have downtown. If we do not rent, sell, and have people preserve these buildings they will disappear. Our children will not know their heritage if these buildings do not exist anymore. The more we sell or rent to a business also brings sales tax revenue to the city. It’s still fun to walk the downtown streets of Poteau to shop, eat, and come to our events.
WE HOLD 7 REGULAR EVENTS PER YEAR:
1. Bluegrass Festival/Motorcycle Show includes Bluegrass Music, Food Vendors, Crafters, and more on the 1st Friday and Saturday of May.
2. Pirate Days Event to kick off the Football Season in September
3. Golf Tournament is held at the Choctaw Country Club on Sept 19th.
4. Fall Festival, Carnival, Games, Cake Walk, Food Vendors, Crafters, The OU/TEXAS Game projected in the Pocket Park on the 2nd Saturday of October.
5. Downtown Trick or Treat, where Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade kids are bussed downtown on Halloween Day to receive candy from all the businesses. All business owners dress up for this event.
6. Santa Downtown on the day of the Christmas Parade which is the 1st weekend of December. Children can give their wish list to Santa and pick up a bag of goodies.December 6th at the Lowrey Hotel from 3pm to 5pm
7. Main Street Christmas Downtown December 11th, 5pm to 7pm. Stores will be open, carriage rides, live Christmas
music in the Pocket Park, drawings from the stores downtown, Santa will be here. Poteau Main Street Matters
